In the past, intimacy, love scenes, nudity, etc. was handled by the director. Sometimes the actors would be asked to “work it out” on their own. The quality and safety of these processes varied from set to set, from director to director. Some directors are known and respected for their professional handling of intimate scenes, others, well, not so much. An Intimacy Coordinator specializes in the choreography and coordinating scenes of simulated intimacy, sex, and nudity for film and television. 

An intimate scene is part of the story, weather it be the simple act of holding hands, a light touch of the cheek, or a gentle kiss. An intimate scene might be loving in nature or involve the simulation of a violent sexual act. A dance scene requires a choreographer, a fight scene requires a stunt coordinator. There is a need for an Intimacy Coordinator to work with the director and the performers, choreographing or blocking the action of an intimate scene. The action should be repeatable and it absolutely should not injure, harm or otherwise put the performers in a situation where they feel they are not in control of the action.

The role of an Intimacy Coordinator as a member of the crew is a fairly new concept. At the present time, there is no legal obligation to use an Intimacy Coordinator nor is there currently any certification process. However an increasing number of production companies, producers, directors and performers are insisting on having an Intimacy Coordinator on set. An Intimacy Coordinator should work with the director to achieve their vision, while working with the performers to ensure a professional, on set environment. Theresa Santiago Adams is a qualified Intimacy Coordinator with over 60 hours of training and class work (the equivalent of an Associate’s Degree) and on set experience.
